Baseball Statman
Baseball was and has always been my passion…my hobby…the sport that intrigues my mind…the strategy, the teamwork, the situations, the “little” things that can turn a game around. Things such as the battle of the batter versus the pitcher; the fact that every stadium is different and unique; the excitement that is generated when you walk up the ramp and see the field before you; the smell of freshly cut grass when you sit in your seats; the sounds of the stadium; the anticipation of a home run by your favorite player or a fantastic fielding play that sparks a standing ovation; hearing our National Anthem before the game; joining thousands of fellow fans in singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” in the middle of the 7th inning; the hope that Dad will buy you a souvenir and a game program; the excitement generated when a foul ball comes near your section; the desire to eat a ballpark frank and drink a soda…all the wonderful traditions associated with the game that is baseball.
That is why I love this game and the happiness that it has provided me throughout the years: its rich history; the fascinating characters who compose the colorful history of baseball; the cathedrals called Wrigley Field, Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium that have been the scene for so many of baseball’s cherished moments.
Throughout the course of baseball history, the fascination with the statistics of this sport overshadow and incite more discussion, arguments and debate than any of the other major American sports.
My intent was and has been to develop a reference-friendly, purposeful method to equate not only individual seasons but entire careers as well.
Why? Because one of the endless pursuits of hot-stove conversation as well as in-season discussions has been: “Was this player’s season better than that player’s?” How does one of today’s players compare to a Hall of Famer from baseball’s storied past?
